Samuel L. Breeses (1794-1870) served in the United States Navy in the early 1800's, being appointed midshipman in 1810. In 1812, he served at the Battle of Lake Champlain, receiving a gallant conduct and an honorary sword with thanks from the US Congress. In 1856, he commanded the Mediterranean Squadron, and after served as commandant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1816, a Captain in 1841, and retired a Rear Admiral in 1862.
