Biography
SILAS H. STRINGHAM entered the Navy in 1810 as midshipman on the frigate President, under Commodore John Rogers. In 1812 he was assigned to the Guererre, under Commodore Stephen Decatur. He later served in the Mexican War and the Civil War. In 1862, Stringham was made a Rear Admiral, on the retired list, and soon after this he became President of the Naval Commission.
