Biography
Winfield Scott Schley (1839-1911) commanded the Greely rescue expedition in the Arctic in 1884. He was second in command to Admiral W.T. Sampson in commanding the naval force blockading Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish-American War. Schley directed the action that destroyed the Spanish fleet in Sampson's absence on July 3, 1898, resulting in a controversy over the credit for the victory. Both men were promoted to Rear Admiral in 1899.
