Richard Roundtree (born July 9, 1942) is an American actor widely recognized for his groundbreaking role as John Shaft in the 1971 action film "Shaft" and its subsequent sequels. Born in New Rochelle, New York, Roundtree embarked on an early career as a model before transitioning to acting, which has spanned five decades and over 100 roles across television and film.
Roundtree made his cinematic debut in 1970's "What Do You Say to a Naked Lady?" but it was his starring role in "Shaft" the following year that catapulted him to prominence. His portrayal of the tough, stylish detective broke racial barriers and established Roundtree as a leading man in the Blaxploitation film era of the 1970s. He reprised his role as Shaft in "Shaft's Big Score!" (1972), "Shaft in Africa" (1973), and much later in the 2000 sequel "Shaft," alongside Samuel L. Jackson. In addition to his Shaft series, Roundtree starred in a variety of notable films including "Earthquake" (1974), "Man Friday" (1975), and "George of the Jungle" (1997). His television credits include recurring roles in series such as "Heroes" (2007-2008) and "Being Mary Jane" (2013-2019).
In 1993, the NAACP honored Roundtree with a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his lasting impact on film and television. His work in "Shaft" has been especially celebrated, with the film being selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2000.
