Biography
Robert Altman, who made his directing debut in 1951 (Modern Football), was known for his large, ensemble casts, whom he encouraged to improvise, and for overlapping dialogue, which sometime seemed to be coming from a distant source. His other features include McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), The Long Goodbye (1973), Popeye (1980), Dr T and the Women (2000) and A Prairie Home Companion (2006), and Altman also directed a long list of TV episodes and series, beginning with Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1957) and Peter Gunn (1958).
