Robert Hegyes, born on May 7, 1951, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was an American actor best known for his role as Juan Epstein on the 1970s television sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter." Hegyes' portrayal of Epstein, a wisecracking Puerto Rican-Jewish student at a Brooklyn high school, made him a household name and left a lasting impression on the show's fans.
Hegyes attended Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), where he pursued his interest in acting. After college, he started his career in New York City, appearing in various stage productions. His breakthrough came with "Welcome Back, Kotter," which aired from 1975 to 1979. As part of the "Sweathogs," a group of remedial students, Hegyes' character was known for his humorous excuses for being late to class, often presenting notes signed by "Epstein's mother."
After "Welcome Back, Kotter," Hegyes continued his acting career with roles in both television and film. He appeared in shows like "Cagney & Lacey," where he played Detective Manny Esposito, and in guest roles on series such as "The Love Boat" and "Diagnosis Murder." His film appearances included roles in "Bob Roberts" (1992) and "The Hungry Bachelors Club" (1999).
In addition to his work on screen, Hegyes was involved in theater. He directed and acted in several stage productions, demonstrating his versatility as an artist. Hegyes also shared his passion for acting by teaching at his alma mater and conducting acting workshops.
