Robert Walker (1918-1951) starred in many films of the 1940s, including Thirty Seconds over Tokyo (1944) the title role in the Private Hargrove films . He was married to actress Jennifer Jones from 1939-1945. (Their two sons, Robert, Jr. and Michael, became actors.) Walker never recovered emotionally from his divorce from Jones and her remarriage to producer David O. Selznick, and struggled thereafter with alcohol abuse. He seemed to be on the rebound in the early 1950s. His performance as the charming psychopath in Strangers on a Train was rated #86 among Premiere magazine's 100 Greatest Performances of All Time (2006). As he was completing the McCarthy-era My Son, John, as a young man suspected by his parents of becoming a communist, he died suddenly of the interaction between a prescribed sedative and the alcohol in his system.
