Died: March 01, 1984 in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom
Roland Culver (August 21, 1900 - March 29, 1984) was an accomplished British actor known for his distinguished stage, film, and television career. He was born in Crouch End, North London, and he passed away in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
Culver attended the Lancing College and initially pursued a career as an architect before turning his attention to theatre. He made his London stage debut in 1924 and established himself as a versatile actor capable of performing in a range of genres. His early career was interrupted by his service as an anti-aircraft gunner in the Royal Artillery during World War II, but he quickly returned to acting after the war.
His film debut came in 1937 with "Underneath the Arches," and he went on to appear in more than 70 films over his career. His most recognized roles in cinema include the dapper Major in "Thunder Rock" (1942), the suave George Salt in "English Without Tears" (1944), and the aristocratic Brian Strange in "Dead of Night" (1945). In addition to his stage and film work, Culver also made significant contributions to television. He starred as Mr. Tulkinghorn in the BBC's 1959 adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Bleak House" and as Major Bellamy in the series "Tales of the Unexpected" (1981-1984).
