ROSIE CASALS
Born: September 16, 1948 in San Francisco, California
Rosemary Casals (b. 1948), emerged as a star in the 1960s. She was particularly dominant in doubles tennis, winning five Wimbledon championships (with Billy Jean King) between 1967 and 1973, and four US open doubles titles (with 4 different partners). She also did much to change the game: wearing bold colors instead of the traditional whites on the court, urging spectators to cheer loudly instead of just politely clapping, and - more importantly, working to boost tournament prizes for women and opening previously amateur tourneys (including Wimbledon) to professionals. She entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985.
