Biography
Rubin Carter (1937-2014), who had a boxing record of 27-12 (19 KOs), lost a 15-round decision to Joey Giardello for the World Middleweight Championship in 1964. On June 17, 1966, two men and a woman were murdered at a New Jersey bar, and on Oct. 14, 1967, Carter and John Artis were arrested for the murders. The story of their two trials, two guilty verdicts and two overturned convictions were the subject of the 1999 film, The Hurricane, starring Denzel Washington, as well as the classic Bob Dylan song "Hurricane". Carter received honorary doctorates of law from universities in Canada and Australia in 2005 for his twelve years of work as head of The Association in Defense of the Wrongly Convicted.
