Biography
Sally Rand (1904-1979), born Harriet Beck. was given her screen name by Cecil B. de Mille when she appeared in silent films of the 1920s. Her dance performances at the Chicago World's Fair (1933) were a national sensation. Rand tantalized male viewers while dancing behind a fan or large bubble. "The Rand is quicker than the eye," she liked to say. She did her fan dance in the film Bolero (1934).
