Sam Rayburn (1882-1961), a Democratic Congressman from Texas from 1913-1961, was Majority Leader (1937-1940), Minority Leader (1947-1949, 1953-1955) and Speaker of the House (1940-1947, 1949-1953, 1956-1961). Noted for his loyalty and integrity to his Party and his country, Rayburn was a trusted advisor to Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy.
