Born on November 15, 1940, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Sam Waterston is an acclaimed American actor, producer, and director. Over his prolific career, Waterston has distinguished himself in film, television, and stage acting.
Waterston graduated from Yale University with a BA in History and soon began his acting career on the New York stage. He made his film debut in "Fitzwilly" (1967), but his breakthrough role came as Nick Carraway in "The Great Gatsby" (1974). One of his most lauded performances was in the film "The Killing Fields" (1984), where he played journalist Sydney Schanberg, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He has also appeared in films such as "Heaven's Gate" (1980), "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986), and "Le Divorce" (2003).
Waterston's television career has been equally illustrious. He is perhaps best known for his role as Jack McCoy in the long-running NBC series "Law & Order," a role he played from 1994 to 2010. His portrayal of McCoy, the Executive Assistant District Attorney, has earned him multiple nominations for various awards, and he became one of the series' most recognizable figures.
