Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri. He became one of the most widely recognized American authors of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, producing novels, travel writings, and essays that remain central to American literature. Clemens spent much of his childhood in Hannibal, Missouri, a Mississippi River town that later provided the setting for several of his major works.

In his early years, Clemens worked as a typesetter and contributor to local newspapers. He later trained as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, earning his pilot’s license in 1859. The river and his experiences on it shaped much of his later writing. During the American Civil War, the closure of river traffic led him to seek other occupations, including a brief period with a Confederate militia and later work as a miner and journalist in Nevada and California. It was during this period, in 1863, that he first used the pen name “Mark Twain.”

Clemens gained national recognition with the publication of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. His major works include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), The Prince and the Pauper (1881), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889), and numerous travel books such as The Innocents Abroad (1869) and Following the Equator (1897). Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in particular has been noted for its portrayal of life along the Mississippi River and its examination of race and society in the United States.
