Sheppard Stevens (1862-1909) wrote many popular volumes of historical fiction. In 1899, he Little, Brown & Co. of Boston published his novel The Sword of Justice, recounting the struggle between Spain and France for control of Florida. Among his other works were In the Eagle's Talon, "romance of the Louisiana Purchase", and I Am the King, a story of the Crusades. Some sources date the death of Stevens in 1902, but he had several books published after that date. "Miss Lazarus" was not fellow author Emma Lazarus; she had died in 1887.
