SHIRLEY TEMPLE
Born: April 23, 1928 in Santa Monica, California
Died: February 10, 2014 in Woodside, California
Shirley Temple was born on April 23, 1928, in Santa Monica, California and she was an American actress and worked in public service and diplomacy.
Temple began taking dance lessons at age three and was discovered by educational film producers, leading to her first screen appearances in 1932. She starred in the movies Stand Up and Cheer! and Bright Eyes (1934), which introduced her signature song “On the Good Ship Lollipop.” She had an exclusive contract with 20th Century Fox and a rapid succession of box office hits, such as Curly Top (1935), Heidi (1937), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938), and The Little Princess (1939).
Temple was awarded a special Juvenile Academy Award in 1935, the first of its kind, for her outstanding contribution to motion pictures during 1934. At the height of her popularity, she was the top box-office draw in America from 1935 to 1938. Her image was licensed for numerous consumer products, and she became a symbol of optimism during the Great Depression. As she grew older, her popularity declined, and by the mid-1940s, Temple retired from acting at age 22. She briefly returned for a television series, Shirley Temple’s Storybook (1958–1961), before retiring permanently from entertainment.
Temple transitioned into politics and diplomacy in the 1960s and 1970s. She ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1967 and was later appointed to several significant diplomatic posts. She served as U.S. Ambassador to Ghana (1974–1976), Chief of Protocol of the United States (1976–1977), and U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (1989–1992) during the end of the Cold War and the Velvet Revolution. Throughout her life, Temple received numerous honors, including the Kennedy Center Honors in 1998.
