John Mills (1908-2005) starred in British films of the 1930s, including Born for Glory (1935). He became better known to American audiences through Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939). During World War II, Mills made inspirational war-themed films like In Which We Serve (1942). Postwar successes included Great Expectations (1946) and Hobson's Choice (1954). He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Ryan's Daughter (1970). Mills, who is the father of actresses Hayley and Juliet Mills, was appropriately cast as Gus, the theatrical cat in the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats (1998).
