Biography | show moreshow less
Born Lyle Russell Cedric "Skitch" Henderson on January 27, 1918, in Halstad, Minnesota, he was an American pianist, conductor, and composer. His career in music was multifaceted, encompassing television, radio, and live performances.

Henderson worked as a pianist for several big bands in the late 1930s and early 1940s, most notably with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. However, he became a household name in the 1950s and 1960s due to his associations with NBC. He served as the original bandleader for "The Tonight Show," working with both Steve Allen and Johnny Carson.

Perhaps his most enduring achievement was founding the New York Pops, the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States, in 1983. The ensemble performs popular music, including jazz and pop, as well as classical pieces, underlining Henderson's ability to straddle different musical genres. In addition to his musical endeavors, Henderson made numerous television appearances. He was a regular on the panel game show "What's My Line?" and hosted his own show, "The Skitch Henderson Show."
