Slim Pickens (born Louis Burton Lindley Jr., June 29, 1919 – December 8, 1983) was an accomplished American actor and rodeo performer. Born in Kingsburg, California, Pickens began his career as a rodeo clown, a profession he took up after a rodeo injury at age 20 curtailed his bronc riding. Adopting the moniker "Slim Pickens", he transitioned to acting in the 1950s and quickly became known for his unique drawl and authentic cowboy demeanor.
Over the course of his career, Pickens appeared in over 170 films and television episodes. He is best remembered for several iconic roles. In Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb", he played Major T.J. "King" Kong, a role that featured the unforgettable scene of him riding a nuclear bomb to its target. Another memorable role was that of the loyal ranch hand in the 1974 satirical western film "Blazing Saddles", directed by Mel Brooks. In addition to his comedic roles, Pickens played more serious parts in Westerns like "One-Eyed Jacks" (1961) and "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" (1970). His authenticity as a cowboy, derived from his rodeo days, lent these roles a depth and believability.
