Stan Smith, born on December 14, 1946, is an American former professional tennis player, best known for his impeccable serve-and-volley game and his major championship wins in the early 1970s. Smith turned professional in 1969 and quickly made a mark in the tennis world. He secured his first major singles title at the 1971 US Open, defeating Jan Kodeš in the final. Following this triumph, in 1972, Smith clinched the Wimbledon Men's Singles title, outlasting Ilie Năstase in the final. Alongside his individual accomplishments, Smith was also a formidable force in doubles. Partnering with Bob Lutz, the duo formed one of the most successful doubles teams of their time, claiming multiple titles and earning accolades for their synergy on court.
Beyond his Grand Slam successes, Smith was instrumental in the U.S. Davis Cup team's victories, contributing to the team's wins in 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1972.
