STRICKLAND GILLILAN
Biography
Strickland Gillilan ((1869-1954) was an American poet and humorist. He is credited with perhaps the shortest poem ever, "On the Antiquity of Microbes", which read simply, "Adam/Had 'em". Despite the wry tone of this letter, Gillian's poems were often sentimental, like his Mother's Day verse, "Reading Mother." Many of his lines, now in the public domain, are reproduced on greeting cards.
