Biography
Ted Turner's transformation of Atlanta's UHF television station TBS into the first "superstation" is credited with accelerating the spread of cable television nationwide.His other innovations include CNN (the first 24-hour news station) and Turner Network Television (TNT), which shows films from the libraries of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). In 1996, Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), the parent company for Turner's businesses, was purchased by Time Warner for $7.6 billion. In 1997, Turner, Vice Chairman of Time Warner's board of directors and head of the division overseeing TBS businesses, pledged $1 billion to the United Nations for humanitarian causes. Turner owns baseball's Atlanta Braves.
