Biography
Thomas Frederick Dixon Jr. (January 11, 1864 – April 3, 1946) was an American author, playwright, and politician, whose works have played a significant role in shaping historical perceptions of the American South. Dixon was born in Shelby, North Carolina, and was a graduate of Wake Forest College and Johns Hopkins University.
As a writer, Dixon gained notoriety for his controversial portrayal of race relations and Reconstruction in his "Trilogy of Reconstruction" novels: "The Leopard's Spots" (1902), "The Clansman" (1905), and "The Traitor" (1907). Dixon's narratives reinforced negative stereotypes about African Americans and glorified the Ku Klux Klan. Notably, "The Clansman" served as the basis for D.W. Griffith's landmark but deeply controversial film, "The Birth of a Nation" (1915).
