Biography
Thomas Hood (1799-1845) contributed many poems and essays to local magazines and newspapers while working as an engraver. In 1821 he became a sub-editor at London Magazine, a post which brought contact with many literary figures. Beginning in 1830, he published a Comic Annual, a satire magazine full of puns. The book he mentions in this letter must be Up the Rhine (1840).
