Tom Flores was born on March 21, 1937, in Sanger, California, and is an American former professional football player and coach. Flores attended the College of the Pacific (now University of the Pacific) and played quarterback for the Tigers. After graduating in 1958, he joined the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Calgary Stampeders but did not make the team. He then played for the Bakersfield Spoilers in the Pacific Football Conference. In 1960, Flores joined the Oakland Raiders as a quarterback during the inaugural season of the American Football League (AFL). He became the first Hispanic starting quarterback in professional football. Flores played for the Raiders until 1966, then had brief stints with the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. He was part of the Chiefs team that won Super Bowl IV in 1970.
After retiring as a player, Flores transitioned into coaching. He began as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Bills in 1971 before joining the Oakland Raiders as an assistant coach in 1972. In 1979, Flores was promoted to head coach of the Raiders, becoming the first Hispanic head coach in NFL history. Flores' tenure as head coach was marked by significant success.
