Tom T. Hall was born on May 25, 1936, in Olive Hill, Kentucky – August 20, 2021, in Franklin, Tennessee), was an American country music singer, songwriter, author, and guitarist.

Hall grew up in Carter County, Kentucky, and wrote his first song as a child. As a teenager, he performed with a bluegrass group called the Kentucky Travelers. He served in the United States Army in Germany, where he performed on Armed Forces Radio, and later worked as a radio announcer and disc jockey. His early professional break came when Jimmy C. Newman recorded his song “D.J. for a Day,” which became a country hit.

Hall moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and became known for narrative songwriting. He wrote “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” recorded by Jeannie C. Riley in 1968, which became a major country and pop crossover hit. His own recordings included “A Week in a Country Jail,” “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died,” “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine,” “I Love,” “Country Is,” and “Faster Horses.”

During his career, Hall wrote 12 No. 1 country songs and many additional Top 10 country hits. His songs frequently used short-story structures and characters drawn from rural life, radio work, travel, and social observation. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1971 and received a Grammy Award in 1972 for album notes. Hall also wrote books, including How I Write Songs, Why You Can and The Storyteller’s Nashville.
