TOMMY CHONG
Born: May 24, 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Thomas B. Kin Chong, better known as Tommy Chong, was born on May 24, 1938, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He is a prominent Canadian-American actor, writer, director, musician, comedian, and cannabis rights activist, best known for his marijuana-themed Cheech & Chong comedy sketches with fellow comedian Cheech Marin.
Chong began his entertainment career as a musician in the early 1960s, playing guitar for a Canadian R&B band named "The Shades." However, he achieved his breakthrough in the entertainment industry when he formed a comedic duo with Cheech Marin in the late 1960s. Their humorous and often satirical sketches focused primarily on hippie, free love, and drug culture. The duo released multiple successful comedy albums and starred in a series of films, including their most well-known "Up in Smoke" (1978). Beyond his work with Marin, Chong has also pursued a solo acting career. He made memorable appearances in television shows such as "That '70s Show," where he portrayed the character Leo, and provided voice talents for animated films like "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" (1992).
Chong's personal life and career have been notably influenced by his outspoken advocacy for marijuana legalization. This advocacy led to legal issues when he was sentenced to nine months in prison in 2003 for selling bongs and other paraphernalia online.
