African American novelist, playwright and educator Toni Morrison (b.1936) is the winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for Beloved (1988), and the 1993 Recipient of the Noble Prize in Literature. Her other acclaimed works, The Bluest Eye (1970) and Sula (1973), also gained national attention. Her 1977 novel Song Of Solomon, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, was the first book to be elected to Book-of -the-Month-Club by a Black author since Richard Wright's Native Son (1940). Morrison's novels, distinguished as Black Epics, follow characters on unearthing journeys of autonomy, chasing mystical pasts in fear of ineluctable futures.
