Tony Trabert (born in 1930) won three singles titles (Wimbledon, French and U.S.) to become the No. 1 amateur player. Known for his powerful backhand and strong volley, Trabert amassed 13 U.S. titles in singles and doubles, and was one of only two Americans (the other was Art Larsen) to win singles championships on all four tennis surfaces: grass (Forest Hills), indoor, clay court and hard court. A member of the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1951-1955, he returned to the team as Captain in 1976, leading Cup-winning teams in 1878 and 1979. Trabert, who became a teaching pro and television tennis commentator when his playing career ended, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1970.
