Biography
The most internationally recognized Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune (1920-1997) was frequently cast in leading roles by Akira Kurosawa, Japan's most celebrated director. Though without training as an actor, Mifune was a powerful presence in films like Rashomon (1951), The Seven Samurai (1954), Throne of Blood (1957) and Yojimbo (1961). Often cast in samurai roles, Mifune could also fill less action-oriented roles, as in High and Low (1962). He played Admiral Yamamoto in Midway (1976) and Lord Toranaga in the miniseries Shogun (1980).
