Biography | show moreshow less
Ty Hardin (born in 1930 as Orrison Whipple Hungerford, Jr.) had some minor film roles before getting his big break. When Clint Walker left his series Cheyenne in a salary dispute, Hardin replaced him as "cousin" Bronco Layne. Walker returned after one season, but Hardin's character had been popular, so ABC gave him his own Western series - Bronco (1958-1962). This led to major roles in several films, including second leads in Merrill's Marauders (1962) and PT-109 (1963). Hardin reportedly turned down the starring role in A Fistful of Dollars. In the 1980s, Hardin became a leader of the Arizona Patriots, a right-wing militia group which claimed citizens were sovereign and had no obligation to obey government regulations. He left the country temporarily (for Costa Rica) when federal authorities cracked down on the group.
