UNA MERKEL
Born: December 10, 1903 in Covington, Kentucky
Died: January 02, 1986 in Los Angeles, California
Biography
Una Merkel (1903-1986) began in silent films, but had greater success with the arrival of talkies. Comic roles were her specialty. With her kewpie dolls looks and southern accent, she made an ideal second lead as best friend to stars like Lombard and Harlow. Famous film appearances included a catfight with Marlene Dietrich in Destry Rides Again (1939), W. C. Fields' daughter in The Bank Dick (1940), and Debbie Reynolds' mother in The Mating Game(1959). She was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress near the end of her career (Summer and Smoke, 1961). She had scored a Tony five years earlier for The Ponder Heart.
