Veronica Lake was born on November 14, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York and she was an American film actress.

Lake began acting in minor film roles in the late 1930s under the name Constance Keane before adopting the stage name Veronica Lake. Her breakthrough came in I Wanted Wings (1941), where her distinctive hairstyle attracted public attention. She co-starred in several films opposite Alan Ladd in This Gun for Hire (1942), The Glass Key (1942), The Blue Dahlia (1946), and Saigon (1948). Lake was frequently cast in femme fatale roles but she also appeared in comedic and dramatic roles, including Sullivan’s Travels (1941), and I Married a Witch (1942).

In addition to her acting career, Lake was a licensed pilot, she flew from Los Angeles to New York City. During the war, Lake also participated in war bond drives and patriotic initiatives. However, she faced controversy after reports that her hairstyle, when copied by female factory workers, posed safety hazards. In response, she modified her look in support of the war effort.

By the late 1940s, Lake’s film career declined due to reported on-set difficulties and her debilitating health. She made her final major film appearance in Stronghold (1951). In the 1960s, she worked sporadically in television and theater and published her autobiography in 1969. She died from hepatitis and acute kidney injury at age 50.
