 JOHN N. GARNER (1886-1967), a U.S. Representative from Texas (1903-1933) and Speaker of the House (1931-1933), served as FDR's Vice President  (1933-1941). A conservative Democrat opposed to many New Deal programs, Garner challenged Roosevelt for the Presidential nomination in 1940 and was dropped from the ticket. He once declared that the Vice Presidency was "not worth a bucket of warm piss."
