VICE PRESIDENT NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER
Born: July 08, 1908 in Bar Harbor, Maine
Died: January 26, 1979 in New York City, New York
Biography
NELSON A. ROCKEFELLER (1908-1979), the grandson of John D. Rockefeller Sr., was Governor of New York from 1959-1973 and sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1964 and 1968. (He secured Platform assurances from Vice President Nixon in exchange for not contesting the nomination in 1960.) When President Nixon resigned and Vice President Ford succeeded to the presidency in 1974, Rockefeller was chosen by President Ford to be Vice President of the U.S. under the provisions of the 25th Amendment. Rockefeller, who did not seek the nomination in 1976, served as VP from 1974-1977. Rockefeller died a billionaire, and yet "Rockefeller Republican" is a term still used to describe liberal Republicans.
