VICE PRESIDENT SPIRO T. AGNEW
Born: November 09, 1918 in Baltimore, Maryland
Died: September 17, 1996 in Berlin, Maryland
In 1962, Republican attorney Spiro Theodore Agnew (1918-1996) was elected as County Executive of Baltimore County, Maryland, his first public office. An outsider in a predominantly Democratic county, in 1966, the year this contract was signed, Democrats selected an opponent of integration as their candidate for the state's Governor and Agnew won the governorship.Sworn in as Governor of Maryland in January 1967, Agnew, who became noted for his backing of tax and judicial reforms, resigned on January 7, 1969, having been elected as Richard M. Nixon's Vice President. Reelected to the vice presidency in 1972, Agnew resigned on October 10, 1973 in the face of charges that he had accepted $29,500 in bribes while Governor of Maryland (and allegedly continued to receive bribes while Vice President) and falsified federal tax returns. Agnew, who pleaded nolo contendere to the income tax charge in federal court, was sentenced to three years probation and fined $10,000. Disbarred in Maryland, he became an international trade executive after leaving office.
