Vikki LaMotta (born Beverly Thailer; January 23, 1930 – January 25, 2005) was an American actress known primarily for her work as a nightclub dancer, her tumultuous marriage to boxer Jake LaMotta, and her portrayal in the 1980 film "Raging Bull." Despite her relatively brief acting career, her life story has had a lasting impact on American cinema.
LaMotta was born in The Bronx, New York City, to a Jewish family. Early in her life, she pursued a career as a dancer and became a well-known nightclub performer. She was classically trained and performed ballet at a very young age, but her career would eventually lead her to more provocative styles of dance.
Her personal life drew significant attention, particularly her relationship with professional boxer Jake LaMotta, whom she married in 1946. Their marriage was marred by domestic violence, which Jake LaMotta later admitted to and discussed publicly. The couple had one daughter together, Christi, before divorcing in 1957. Vikki LaMotta later penned a memoir about her life and experiences, titled "Raging Bull: My Story," which candidly explored her marriage’s turbulent nature and her own struggles and resilience.
The 1980 biographical sports drama film "Raging Bull," directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta, brought Vikki LaMotta's story to a broader audience. While LaMotta herself did not act in the film, her life story, as depicted in "Raging Bull," is considered one of the movie's central narratives, and the film itself is often cited as one of the greatest American movies.
