Vin Fiz Autographs, Memorabilia & Collectibles
The 'Vin Fiz' is part of the/Collection of the National Air and Space Museum." Calbraith Perry Rodgers (1879-1912), a descendent of famed U.S. naval commanders Oliver Hazard Perry and Matthew Perry, had spent far more hours as a motorcycle racer than as aviator before beginning this historic flight. He was sponsored by Vin Fiz, a grape soft drink, hence the name of his aircraft, a 35-horsepower Wright Ex biplane. Rodgers' wife and support team followed the flight by train, a necessity since he crashed 19 times and needed many repairs on the journey. Rodgers died in a plane crash the following year.
