Biography
Vivian Vance (1909-1979), is best known for her role as Ethel Mertz on the I Love Lucy TV series (1951-1961). Vance was married (1941-1959) to actor Philip Ober, whom Lucille Ball once accused of physically abusing Vance. Vance, who had been discovered by Desi Arnaz, didn't want the part of Ethel, saying that the role was "too frumpy", and she hated being cast opposite William Frawley (Vance was 39 and Frawley was 64 at the time they were cast and the two never got along). Vance also appeared in Shower of Stars (May 1955) and during the term of the contract she appeared on The Bob Hope Show (October 1956), The I Love Lucy Christmas Special (1956) and in The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, a one-hour sequel to the TV series.
