WALTER CRONKITE
Born: November 04, 1916 in St. Joseph, Missouri
Died: July 17, 2009 in New York City, New York
Biography
WALTER CRONKITE (1916-2009) joined CBS News in 1950 and was the anchorman and managing editor of the CBS Evening News from 1962-1981. A reporter since 1939, he had been chosen (by lot) to be the only newsman to cover the June 6, 1944 Normandy invasion from the air. Long considered "the most trusted man in America," Cronkite has remained active with documentaries and special public affairs programs, including hosting the Kennedy Center Honors for many years. Cronkite, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981, published his autobiography, A Reporter's Life, in 1997.
