Walter Johannes Damrosch (January 30, 1862 – December 22, 1950) was a preeminent American music conductor and educator of German birth. Born in Breslau, Silesia, Damrosch began his illustrious career in the United States in 1881, following in the footsteps of his father, Leopold Damrosch, a renowned conductor.

Perhaps his most memorable work was the opera "Cyrano," which premiered in 1913, and "The Man Without a Country," another notable opera first performed in 1937. His composition "Danny Deever," a setting of Rudyard Kipling's poem, became a choral standard in the American repertoire. Damrosch devoted a significant part of his life to the promotion of German music in America, specifically the works of Wagner. His successful "Wagner Nights" at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, cemented his reputation as a foremost interpreter of the German composer. In 1928, he started his music appreciation hour, a series of radio broadcasts sponsored by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and primarily targeted towards young listeners in schools. The series was titled "Music Appreciation Hour" and ran until 1942. His approachable and engaging style of teaching made classical music accessible to many who would not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with it. In these broadcasts, he introduced audiences to great symphonic works from composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, among others.
