WALTER LANTZ
Born: April 27, 1899 in New Rochelle, New York
Died: March 22, 1994 in Burbank, California
Walter Lantz, an influential figure in the animation industry, was born on April 27, 1899, in New Rochelle, New York. His career spanned seven decades, during which he made significant contributions to the development and popularization of animated films. Lantz is perhaps most recognized for creating the character Woody Woodpecker, a woodpecker whose characteristic laugh and mischievous antics made him a beloved figure in American popular culture. Woody Woodpecker first appeared in the short film "Knock Knock" (1940) and subsequently starred in over 200 short films produced by the Walter Lantz Studio.
Before establishing his studio, Lantz worked at Universal Pictures, where he directed Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of the first successful animated characters, after taking over the series from Walt Disney. A little-known fact about Lantz is that he was one of the first animation producers to embrace television, and in the late 1950s, he began airing Woody Woodpecker cartoons on television, which significantly boosted the character's popularity.
