Warner Baxter was born on March 29, 1889, in Columbus, Ohio and he was an American actor.
He began his film career in the silent era and transitioned successfully to sound pictures. Baxter was well known as the Cisco Kid in In Old Arizona (1928), a role for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 2nd Academy Awards in 1930. This was one of the first major sound films shot outdoors. Throughout the 1930s, he played a wide range of characters in films such as 42nd Street (1933), Penthouse (1933), and Broadway Bill (1934). He also portrayed the title role in The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936), directed by John Ford, in which he played Dr. Samuel Mudd. During the 1940s, Baxter became known for his portrayal of Dr. Robert Ordway in Columbia Pictures’ Crime Doctor film series, which ran from 1943 to 1949. He appeared in ten entries of the series, which followed a criminal-turned-psychiatrist who helped solve crimes.
Baxter was married to actress Winifred Bryson from 1918 until his death. Outside of acting, he was also involved in technological innovation; he developed a portable radio device used by the U.S. military during World War II.
