Biography
William Brent (1775-1848), from a distinguished Virginia family, was the longtime Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia. He had been a cavalry commander in the D.C. militia, rising to the rank of colonel. Brent had served as temporary secretary to Thomas Jefferson, but declined a permanent position.
