Biography
William Channing (1780-1842) was an organizer of the American Unitarian Association (1825), becoming known as the "apostle of Unitarianism." One of the foremost Unitarian theologians of his time, Channing was also one of the most important Unitarian preachers of the early nineteenth century and known for his articulate and passionate sermons and speeches. He tended to avoid esoteric points of doctrine in favor of preaching morality, charity and Christian responsibility so, not surprisingly, he also became a leading figure in American movements to end slavery and poverty and promote temperance and peace.
