William Lawrence Shirer (February 23, 1904 - December 28, 1993) was an esteemed American journalist and war correspondent, known for his groundbreaking historical work, "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich."

Shirer began his journalism career in the 1920s, first with the Chicago Tribune and later as a foreign correspondent in Europe for the Universal News Service. During this time, he covered notable stories such as Mahatma Gandhi's Salt March in India in 1930. However, his most prominent role was that of a CBS radio broadcaster in pre-World War II Europe, working closely with esteemed journalist Edward R. Murrow. Shirer's broadcasts from Berlin, providing firsthand accounts of Adolf Hitler's rise to power, gave American audiences an invaluable perspective on the unfolding events in Nazi Germany. His on-the-ground reportage culminated in the 1941 work "Berlin Diary," which chronicled his experiences and observations in the tumultuous years from 1934 to 1941.

In the post-war years, Shirer transitioned to a career in writing. His magnum opus, "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" (1960), provided a detailed account of Nazi Germany based on captured Nazi documents, personal experience, and other sources. This landmark work received the National Book Award and is still considered an essential read on the subject.
