William Morris Meredith (1799-1873 was United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Taylor (1849-1850). A strong opponent of free trade, he devoted his Annual Report of 1849 to advocacy of high protective tariffs. Before serving in the Cabinet, he   was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and Philadelphia City Council. Later he was Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1861-1867). He served on the Alabama Claims Commission in 1870.
