William Pierce Frye (1830-1911) was U.S. Representative (1871-1881) and U.S. Senator from Maine (1881-1911). He served as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1896-1911. From November 21, 1899 (death of V.P. Hobart) to March 3, 1901, and from September 14, 1901 (death of President McKinley) to March 3, 1905, as President Pro Tempore, Frye was next in line to the Presidency.
