Died: January 2, 2001 in Bethesda, Maryland
WILLIAM P. ROGERS (1913-2001), a New York lawyer who had served on Governor Thomas E. Dewey's anti-crime task force, was President Dwight Eisenhower's Attorney General (1958-1961) and later President Richard Nixon's Secretary of State (1969-1973). Though a respected figure, Rogers was generally overshadowed in foreign policy by the man who eventually replaced him as Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. As a member of the task force investigating the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, Rogers was the first to criticize NASA management for endangering astronaut safety.
