Biography
WILLIAM PETER BLATTY's (1928-2017) best-selling novel, The Exorcist, based on stories in "The Washington Post" about an exorcism in nearby Mount Rainier, Maryland, was published in 1971. The book, which remained on the best-seller list for 55 weeks and sold nearly 13 million copies in the U.S., was made into a motion picture that opened in December 1973. Blatty, who served as the film's producer, won an Academy Award for his screenplay. The Exorcist broke box office records, bringing in $165 million, and was re-released in 2000. The new version included eleven minutes of footage cut from the original.
